What was it like being part of the movie adaptation of On The Road?

I can’t believe I got the part. I mean she’s the polar
opposite to me, especially like how people perceive me. She couldn’t be more different.
I met Walter Salles right after I did Twilight and it hadn’t come out yet, and
I knew, based on that meeting there was just, I mean, the word just doesn’t do
it, but he’s the most stirringly inspirational person I’ve really kind of ever
worked with, and I knew instantly that he knew that I liked the book for the
same reasons that he liked it. It was my first favourite book that started me
reading- I was like thirteen or fourteen when I read it. So I don’t even have
the words to describe the opportunity to play that part, what that means for
me. And yeah, she’s very different, and also the fact that I know more about
her than anyone’s allowed to know. I’ve talked to people that nobody else has
an opportunity to speak to, and I’ve spent days with her daughter. We spoke to
people that gave us gifts that we could never get in any other position and it by
far is the coolest thing I’ve ever done in my life, and I totally thank Walter
for that.

a few fans. She looked tired but had a big smile on her face for her fans. Then
that fan saw the On The Road, producer enter the hotel. she waited until he was

movie is done, there was never any technical problems with it, they just wanted
to wait for a big occasion to attract as many people as possible (I'm

Yesterday, in Part 1 of my exclusive interview with Walter Salles and Jerry Cimino, I wrote about the movie On the Road, a collaboration among Francis Ford Coppola, Walter Salles and Jose Rivera based on Jack Kerouac’s book, “On the Road,” and the journey to bring Salles’ donated 1949 Hudson to its new home, the Beat Museum in San Francisco, CA. The film is a $25 million dollar production and it deals with the spontaneous cross-country trips and situations encountered by Sal Paradise, Dean Moriarty and friends as they sought to satisfy their lust for experience. In Part 2, we focus more on the film itself. Specifically, can a film based on a book set in the 1950s and published in 1957 remain relevant in today’s world? Will the book’s themes, translated into film, resonate well with audiences?

I went looking for answers and approached director Salles and Beat Museum director and founder Jerry Cimino. They were both extremely gracious with their time and provided me with incredible insights. Cimino never rushed me through our detailed conversation. Salles took the time to answer my questions despite being on vacation in his home country of Brazil for the first time in 18 months due his dedication to working on the film. Initially, I focused the discussion on the relevance of the Beats in today’s world but it was inevitable we would end up exploring the process and expectations that come from interpreting a book into film, as well as talking about the film and cast.

I turned to Cimino first to help put into context the book’s relevance in today’s world, particularly for those who may just be discovering Kerouac and the Beats.

“On The Road” speaks to a timeless issue; it’s about a quest for authenticity. It’s about a quest for living life and looking for joy in the world. It’s timeless in the sense that every person lives and goes through these moments,” he says. “I think Kerouac’s way of writing and his style and the way he portrays his characters is so endearing to people because people see themselves or their friends in the characters.”

He considers the book to be an archetype of spiritual quest and shares that notion with others as part of the educational aspect that inherently comes from running the Beat Museum. “A lot of people think it’s all about the sex, the drugs, the jazz, rock and roll, or the music and that’s fine; that gets them in the door. Once they get here, we try to help them understand this is really about finding out who you are in the world. It’s about finding in your own voice, your own level of authenticity and what’s important to you.”

Walter Salles and The Beat Museum Keep the Spirit of the Beats Alive (Part 1)

Jerry Cimino, director and founder of San Francisco’s Beat Museum, had been searching for a car, specifically a Hudson, for over five years to add to the Museum’s collection but when he finally found it, he had to keep his excitement hushed for a whole year as the vehicle came to him via a film project that was still in progress.

The Hudson in question isn’t an ordinary vintage car. Its pedigree can be found in an American literature classic considered by many to be the most important novel of the Beat generation: Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road.” The cinematic connection comes from Francis Ford Coppola and internationally acclaimed director Walter Salles’ collaboration on the aptly titled film, On the Road (OTR). The film has a star-studded cast that includes Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Steve Buscemi, Amy Adams, and Tom Sturridge, among others.

In December 2011, Cimino was able to publicly share the big reveal when Hedlund (Tron Legacy, Country Strong) personally delivered the ’49 Hudson used in the film, which is one of the most anticipated films of 2012. The project was filmed in 2010 across multiple locations: in the US (New Orleans, San Francisco), Canada (Montreal, Gatineau), South America (Argentina, Chile), and Mexico. A second unit shot took place in Spring 2011 for which Salles, Hedlund and a small crew took the Hudson on an additional 4,000 mile US road trip.

Hedlund, who plays Dean Moriarty (a character modeled after Kerouac’s friend Neal Cassady, and a powerhouse inspirational source for many of the Beats), brought meaningful company with him on the road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco’s Beat Museum—Neal’s son John and Cassady family friend Albert C. Hinkle, the only living participant of the 1940s trips immortalized in the book.

For the last year and a half we’ve showcased a magnificent exhibition called On The Road Around the World. It consisted of a hundred copies of On The Road in over twenty-five different languages. It testified to the staying power and reach of Kerouac’s work.

You’ve probably heard that when Truman Capote was asked about On The Road back in the 1950s, his comment was “That’s not writing, that’s typing.” No offense to Capote, but fifty-five years later we’ve got to wonder how many languages In Cold Blood has been translated into, and in how many places around the world it’s currently available.

The books in the On The Road Around the World exhibition are from the private collection of Horst Spandler. Horst lives in Germany and is a good friend of ruth weiss. When it came time to ship all the books back to Germany, we delayed the dismantling of the exhibit for a couple of weeks to coincide with the arrival of the ‘49 Hudson, driven by Garrett Hedlund. We’d thought it’d make a great photo-op to showcase the books surrounding Garrett at The Beat Museum. An added bonus was getting Al Hinkle in on the act.

Story: Don't make us trot out the dunce caps. You should probably have read On the Road well before college, so we're all scratching our heads why it took this long to
transform the book into a film. David Cronenberg already made the previously
unfilmable Naked Lunch, for Mugwump's sake!

Why it could be cool: Jack Kerouac's timeless novel of geographical and metaphysical liberation in a '40s stuffed with sex, drugs, jazz and cars influenced everyone from Bob Dylan and The Doors to Hunter S. Thompson's gonzo journalism. Walter Salles' On the Road film adaptation will star Tron Legacy's Garrett Hedlund and the Twilight franchise's Kristen Stewart for post-millennial fanboys and girls. Plus, Viggo Mortensen as William S. Burroughs? Sold!

The Truth About On The Road

In his latest book, Gerald Nicosia has unlocked the dynamic of Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady, and not a moment too soon. Nicosia, the author of “Memory Babe,” the definitive Jack Kerouac book, was an advisor to the “On The Road” movie due to be premiered in May at the Cannes Film Festival. “On The Road,” published in 1951, was of course, the book that made Kerouac famous. It was inspired by Jack London’s famed book, “The Road,” published in 1907.

Nicosia’s new book is “One And Only: The Untold Story of On The Road.”

Its genesis was on the set of "On The Road," when he was hired to teach the actors what beatnik life was all about.

Nicosia had thirty years previously interviewed Lu Anne Henderson, known as Marylou in "On The Road" for "Memory Babe."

Cassady famously wrote Lu Anne, “We’ll be together, you are my one and only wife.” And through all the wives and husbands and boyfriends and girlfriends, they were each other’s lovers to the end of time.

Kerouac and Cassady had a sometimes homoerotic relationship but Nicosia says it was Lu Anne who brought them together, and encouraged them to love each other in a way that defined the beat movement.

Up until now, most of what people know about Cassady and Kerouac comes from Carolyn Cassady, Cassady’s second wife. Her memoirs shaped the 1980 film “Heart Beat,” starring Nick Nolte as Cassady and Sissy Spacek as Carolyn.

The new film is more from the viewpoint of Lu Anne, Cassady’s first wife. That is because Nicosia as the preeminent Kerouac scholar was hired as an advisor for "On The Road." When he played the tapes for actress Kristen Stewart, both he and the actress had some major revelations.

On the Road Movie Delayed?

Fans who’ve been waiting seemingly forever for the release of On the Road might be made to wait a little longer. The adaptation of Kerouac’s classic novel appears to have run into a little legal trouble.

According to Albert C. Hinkle, “There’s some kind of legal problem – one of Jack’s relatives is challenging Coppola’s rights to the book. I haven’t heard of any set dates for the movie premiere.” Since that Facebook post, he has been updating his fans with the simple message: “Just to let you all know: I don’t really have any information on when OTR will be coming out, or where it will be released. I hear the same things everyone else does; whether that is really going on or not, I don’t know for sure. But the minute I get any solid information, I will share it with you all.” People are taking Hinkle as an inside source, but he claims to know no more than anyone else.

Charles Gillibert, on the other hand, is one of the movie’s producers. On Twitter, he shared some “goodnews”: “sorry we are dealing with some goodnews everything is frozen until we closeit Only thing I can promise is that you will be the1rst informed.” Since then he has updated that he, too, has no solid information and is merely waiting to hear more. He has stated that “we are closing discussions with the futur best partners to defend otr and they have to be involved in decisions with market..” Which sounds as though the lawyers are demanding the everything be temporarily shut down. Then, in a response to a query about movie posters, Gillibert said, “I won’t give you stop date anymore because things change and I want to make sure i give you only good information.” Hmm… “good information”? Gillibert had previously been certain that there would be an official website and trailer before the end of 2011!

Peter Howell of Toronto Star tweeting (via HollywoodElsewhere) about a European premiere on May 23rd — which, if you do the simple math, might just point to an appearance at Cannes. That latter event obviously depends on timely completion, some modicum of quality, general interest on the Cannes committee’s part, and so forth, but an entry is also a good-to-great sign. The delayed, quiet project kind of needs that at this point.

On The Road (UK release date TBA): Could 2012 be the year that Sal (Sam Riley) and Dean (Garrett Hedlund) finally hit the road? Executive producer Francis Ford Coppola has held the film rights to the era-defining beat novel since 1979, but numerous attempts to get the sprawling travelogue by Jack Kerouac (pictured) on to the screen have puttered and died. Filming on this version began in 2010, with director Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries, Linha de Passe) in the driving seat, so it's not unreasonable to expect this to come barrelling into town, whooping and hollering "Go Go GO!" some time soon.

Arrival of the ’49 Hudson :

Garrett Hedlund (portraying Neal Cassady in the upcoming film adaptation of Kerouac’s ‘On the Road’, directed by Walter Salles) drove from Los Angeles to San Francisco on December 7th, 2011 to deliver the 1949 Hudson used in the movie to The Beat Museum. Accompanying Hedlund were John Allen Cassady (son of the real Neal) and Al Hinkle (‘Big Ed Dunkel’ in the book, and the last living man to have accompanied Jack & Neal).

The 1949 Hudson is now on ongoing public display at the Beat Museum.

The ’49 Hudson Comes to the Beat Museum

Neal Cassady’s legendary ‘49 Hudson, made famous in Jack Kerouac’s novel On The Road, is lost to posterity. Other than Jack’s description of it in the novel (to the point where it is almost a character in the book) and the memory of it in the minds of Neal’s wife Carolyn Cassady and his friend Al Hinkle (‘Big Ed Dunkel’ in the book) there is nothing tangible that can prove it ever even existed. There is no bill of sale, no vehicle identification number, no license plate—not even a photograph. It’s memory is kept alive in the mind of the reader.

And perhaps this is the way it should be. The ‘49 Hudson represents a dream, and dreams are malleable. The Hudson represents Freedom and Desire and “Go, go, go…” as Neal would say, so perhaps it is fitting that you can’t really touch it. The Hudson represents anticipation, the joy of being alive in the world and heading towards that next horizon. It’s an inner journey that is experienced in the external world. In other times the vehicle for this exploration might have been a sailing ship, a white horse in the Cowboy West, or in the future, Hans Solo’s Millennium Falcon.

So none of us can really see the actual ‘49 Hudson that Jack & Neal drove across America. Because there is no tangible record of it, some car collector might be showcasing it as the pride of his collection, yet unaware of its lineage. That, or it might be rusting away in some junkyard in Mexico, or as Neal and Carolyn’s son, John Allen Cassady, is fond of saying, “It’s probably at the bottom of some ravine in the hills of California.”

What was the Beatnick bootcamp you had to attend in lieu of shooting On the Road?

Walter Salles wanted the main actors to get together and hang out with a lot of experts and biographers from the Beatnick generation, who came in to talk to us. We would watch films from that time and listen to Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie while doing push-ups and picking our fingers. I learned to type and I learned to speak French Canadian with a Quebecois accent. It was a full schedule.

How’s your American accent?

I think it’s better then passable. I just did the ADR and voice overs. The English have so many different dialects so we have to learn all of them, mainly to tease each other. Speaking like an American isn’t that difficult. Plus, there are a lot of recordings of Jack Kerouac to work off of. But you be the judge. Take someone who doesn’t know I’m English.

How was the shoot?

It’s a tough book to adapt into a film and a lot of people have tried and failed in the past. Well, it was a five or six month shoot. It was hard going. The therapy is going fine, by the way. I should be rid of all of it before too long.

Elisabeth Moss Works With Kristen Stewart: Intimidated Much?

Amy Adams may have been slightly intimidated by Kristen Stewart's young age when they were making On The Road.

So did their other costar, Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss, feel the same way about Ms. Stewart?

"She's super nice," Moss told me about K.Stew at this week's Hollywood Foreign Press Association's annual grant-giving luncheon. "She's really so normal and so nice. I was probably more intimidated by Amy Adams because she's like my favorite actress in the world. So everybody was just intimidated by everybody else."

Moss insists she doesn't feel too much pressure being a part of the movie adaptation of Jack Keoruac's Beat Generation classic. "The great thing is it's not on me," she said. "You know what I mean? It's not my responsibility but who they chose to adapt it and who they chose to be in it and who they chose to direct."

Directed by Walter Salles, the indie also stars Garrett Hedlund (swoon!), Sam Riley and Kirsten Dunst, among many others.

No surprise, but Moss is psyched to see Stewart as Snow White. "I think it's perfect," she gushed. "It's a great idea. I think she's going to be great."

Kim Bubbs has been working hard at acting for a long time, appearing in many, many films and television shows. Being from Canada originally, she has had the advantage of working in both English and French productions. And now, she is about to go from “actress” to “star actress”. Why? Because this year she will be in two heavily-watched films, an adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” and the prequel to John Carpenter’s “The Thing”.Kim called me in July 2011 and we talked about her latest projects…

GS: In “On the Road” (2011), you play Laura. Who is Laura?

KB: Laura is Sal’s one true gal after driving across the country, looking for love in all the wrong places. Laura is the woman he wants to settle down with and change his life.

GS: What sort of experiences did you or your character get to take part in during the course of the shooting?

KB: My character is the good girl, she’s the girl you bring home to Mom. She’s the girl who believes in Sal and just wants to have an honest future with him. She’s not the bohemian kind of, darker, adventurous girl he likes in the rest of the film. She’s more stable. I mean, she’s fun-loving, but she symbolizes a change and true love. [Gavin notes: The character of Laura is based on Joan Haverty. Joan and Jack Kerouac met, were married two weeks later, and their marriage lasted eight months. In the meantime, she became pregnant. Nine months later, already divorced, she gave birth to Jan Kerouac. So, regardless of how the book or movie may play out, don't be fooled -- Laura cannot tame Sal Paradise.]

GS: Were you familiar with the Kerouac novel?

KB: Yes, absolutely. It’s a classic. What’s really interesting, too, is that his parents were French-Canadian, so it was a lot of fun working with actors who speak French. It was fun throwing in French expressions from Quebec, especially with Sam Riley (who plays Sal), who is English.

GS: Did being familiar with the novel help you bring your character to life more than just reading the script would have?

KB: Yeah. I mean, it’s an excellent script. It really is, it’s very well-written. But yeah, it always gives you more in-depth information about what the writer originally intended. A script is an adaptation and can’t include everything that was in the book. So it definitely helped.

GS: So, you play the boring character…

KB: Nooooo!

GS: I’m sorry, but it’s true. Did you get any time on set with the big names associated with the film — Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi?

KB: I spent lots of time with Garrett Hedlund (who plays Dean Moriarty) and Sam Riley. They were amazing, they were a lot of fun. Generous, down to Earth. A lot of time we were freezing our butts off outside. We were supposed to be in New York, but we were in Montreal. It was maybe 12 degrees outside and I was wearing a strapless dress for one of the scenes. The crew and director (Walter Salles) were wearing snow pants and covered from head to toe. Sam Riley was very nice to me, offering his jacket.

GS: Any last words for this film?

KB: I’m really excited about “On the Road”! We had a fabulous director, Walter Salles. I think it’s going to be big and I’m proud to be a part of it.

Kerouac adaptation still waiting for U.S. deal.

French mini-major MK2 has inked a slew of sales on Walter Salles' "On The Road," the bigscreen adaptation of Jack Kerouac's classic novel.

MK2 exec produces and handles international sales on the $25 million pic. "On The Road" stars Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen and Amy Adams.

Pic was nabbed by Alliance Films for Canada, Noble Entertainment, Future Film and Star Media Entertainment for Scandinavia and Rosebud for Greece.

"On the Road" has already been picked up by Icon (U.K., Australia), Cineart (Benelux), Telemuenchen (Germany, Austria), Medusa (Italy), Filmcoopi (Switzerland), and Falcon (Middle East).

Francis Ford Coppola produced via his San Francisco-based American Zoetrope. Salles' Rio de Janeiro-based Videofilmes and the U.K.'s Film4 co-produced.

And what a story! After wrapping filming for On The Road in San Francisco in December, 2010 Walter Salles and Garrett Hedlund took to the road for a second time in April of 2011. They spent two weeks along with a crew of five and blasted 4,000 miles across the back roads of the USA. They purposefully avoided the interstate highways not built until the 1950’s, retracing as best they could the original route of two lane roads Jack & Neal drove.

The purpose of this unpublicized trip was for Walter and Garrett to be involved in the "Second Unit" shooting themselves. True to their desire to make On The Road as authentic as they can they wanted to capture the images of the '49 Hudson roaring across the continent with the sights and sounds of the country in the background. The story of On The Road is also the story of America and the film makers wanted to capture "the physical and human geography at the core of OTR as part of the film."

Director Walter Salles has just returned from the United States. Crossed the country from one side to another with the filming of "On the Road," a film inspired by the book by Jack Kerouac. The filmmaker spoke with Glamurama and added a few stories.

* "Six years of preparation," said Waltinho, who managed to close co-production with no less than Francis Ford Coppola and the French MK2. "We crossed the USA from start to finish with a team of five people. We also went by Canada and Mexico. Trepidations Aside, ‘On the Road’ Becomes a Movie at Last

Many consider Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” sacred text. The novel was, after all, originally typed on a scroll.

Translated into 40 languages, millions of copies of the Beat generation classic have sold worldwide since the novel was published in 1957, placing it among the 20th century’s most influential books.

When it comes to the big screen, however, “On the Road” has faced a Kerouac curse. Past efforts by Hollywood to adapt the author’s work have been failures.

Now, somewhat quietly, “On the Road” has finally been made into a movie. The $25 million production, shot in San Francisco, Montreal and other locales, is scheduled for release this fall.

The movie is expected to be of keen interest in San Francisco where the Beats and their old hangouts are a cottage industry. Each year, thousands of people flock to North Beach to visit the City Lights bookstore and the bar Vesuvio or to gawk at Kerouac artifacts in The Beat Museum.

But with so much interest comes anxiety.

Garrett and Sam Talk About The Mexican Whorehouse Scene

This is undoubtedly the Mexican whorehouse scene from On the Road. It takes place close to the end of the book, just after Jack and Neal blasted pot with the Mexican cats, Victor and his brothers, with them all digging each other, not speaking each other's languages but just having fun being high together in the sun. Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund told us about filming this scene back in December when we were all sitting at Vesuvio in San Francisco.

Garrett said, "Walter basically arranged for us to have this huge spontaneous party when we were shooting in Mexico. Most of it was unscripted. He just brought in the music and the actresses who were playing the girls working in the whorehouse and he told us all to drink and dance and play just as if we were partying in a whorehouse!"

"Well, that sounds like good duty," I laughed.

"It wasn't!” Sam Riley piped up. "It was especially hard on me, mate. I just got married a year ago (to German actress and his Control co-star Alexandra Maria Lara) and my wife's an actress and we hadn't seen each other much as she was shooting a movie, too. And then Walter goes and puts me in a room full of all these girls tearing all their clothes off! Thanks a lot, Walter!"

"And Jerry," Garrett continued, "the great part is I got to really channel Neal during that scene. Remember all those Neal Cassady DVDs you got me when we first met?"

"Yeah. You were doing your research...that was when? 2007? You bought everything we had on Neal Cassady. You were the first one cast."

"Right. You told me the footage shows how Neal moved and I had to get them. Well, they definitely came in handy for this scene. Walter told me just to let myself go with the dancing and I started remembering all those images of watching Neal dance. You know, those distinct jerky dance moves Neal had where he'd whip his upper torso around? So I started doing that and then I just went into a trance, even dancing with a chair like Neal did and just letting it all out. We shot a lot of film so who knows what will wind up in the final cut, but those DVDs gave me everything I needed for that scene."

Location Sound For OTR Done Yesterday

Spent all day yesterday doing location sound for the upcoming motion picture of On the Road directed by Walter Salles (who directed Motorcycle Diaries). The first few hours we were shooting inside a 1949 Hudson Hornet cruising up and down the west side highway. This is not a quiet or comfortable vehicle so we will see if anything usable came out of it. Then on to two very cold rooftops in Harlem. They were a great crew to work with and I wish them luck as they take that Hudson on a trip across the country. Source Via

Sam Riley Says "It's been really nuts." About OTR Shoot

Since completing 13, Riley has shot two roles that look set to be equally as iconic as his turn as Ian Curtis. The first is as the scarfaced gangster Pinkie in a new adaptation of Graham Greene's Brighton Rock. "I was just in heaven," he says. "Sharp suit, slick hair, scar on my face, flick-knife in my pocket." He followed that with bringing the beat-lit hero Sal Paradise to life in Walter Salles's take on Jack Kerouac's On The Road, a film that's been in development for more than three decades.

Talk about setting yourself up for a fall. "I ask for it really!" Riley laughs, but he points out that the pressure was never so intense as when he took on Joy Division and their brigade of hard-core fans. "I didn't get much abuse… but I thought that was pretty destined for failure at the time." It helps, he says, that he was never a major Joy Division fan. Nor had he seen the 1947 film version of Brighton Rock - in which Richard Attenborough gave a chilling portrayal of Pinkie - or read On The Road. "I think if I'd been more of a fanboy of these things, I'd have been more petrified."

He's only just returned from On The Road's gruelling five-month shoot when we meet, one that took him from Montreal to Patagonia, Arizona, New Orleans, Calgary and San Francisco. "It's been really nuts," he admits. "I'm still recovering." To play Paradise, a thinly veiled version of Kerouac, of course, preparation ranged from reading the book out loud with a dialect coach to attending a "beatnik boot camp" for four weeks before the shoot - where he'd be "doing press-ups while reciting Nietzsche and Thomas Wolfe".

Closing in on her 88th year, Carolyn Cassady is still gracefully full-speed ahead. The wife of Neal Cassady, one-time lover and confidant of Jack Kerouac, and a somewhat reluctant Beat Generation icon herself, she’s recently returned to her home in England after a whirlwind trip to the U.S. for the production wrap-up of Walter Salles’ new film version of Kerouac’s masterpiece “On the Road,” in which she is portrayed by actress Kirsten Dunst. Her daily duties include sheaves of mail in need of reply, books to sign (her own “Off the Road: My Years with Cassady, Kerouac, and Ginsberg,” a treasure in itself), the occasional visiting rock star, and interviews to grant and subsequently deliver. It isn’t odd for the BBC to call or knock requesting a quote or access to the private mementos of her storied past.

A decade after I did my undergraduate work at Marlboro College on Beat Generation writers, with focus on the women, Carolyn and I became friends through correspondence. And as one might assume a fan would, I’ve peppered her with whatever questions cross my mind. Many times, she’ll implore me back to her book. “Didn’t I cover that in ‘Off the Road’?” And of course many times I find she has, to my chagrin. But she is always welcoming, reminding me that a simple sign in her kitchen reads “Ask Carolyn.” So I do.

I’ve come to also relish the questions she asks me because I learn something of her even by the reversal of our typical pattern of inquiry. Recently, we revisited my career with NewsBank. I’d glossed over that topic in the early days of our chats, explaining I work not as a journalist but rather as a writer of teaching activity-plans based on current news and historical events. This time around however, I expanded upon the details of NewsBank’s Readex division: how we not only preserve historical newspaper archives through the digitization process, but also make said archives more easily retrievable through a search-interface. She thought that was interesting, or at least feigned so out of politeness. Whether her interest was authentic or not, I began to wonder about her ideas on newspapers, past and present. So yet again, I asked Carolyn.

Don't look now, but Beat novelist Jack Kerouac's seminal masterpiece 'On the Road' is about to get the tween treatment. The film adaptation draws on a fresh-faced cast, including 'Tron: Legacy' star Garrett Hedlund, newcomer Sam Riley and Bella Swan herself, Kristen Stewart, a teeny-bopper trifecta sure to draw hordes of 'Twilight' fans. The first production still (above) from the hotly anticipated film was recently released and has Kerouac fans around the world talking.

While some have questioned the casting choices, others think director Walter Salles was spot-on in picking Stewart, Hedlund and Riley to play Kerouac's iconic characters. "Well, the irony of it all is that Marylou [Stewart's character] was about 17 in 'On the Road,' and Kristen Stewart kind of looks like what I imagine she looked like," says Dennis McNally, Grateful Dead historian and author of 'Desolation Angel,' the definitive Kerouac biography. "I met Salles, the filmmaker. He was doing a lot of advance research. And while 'On the Road' as a film project always seemed jinxed to me -- ['Godfather' director Francis Ford] Coppola's been trying to make it since the 1970s -- I wish him well."

At first glimpse, it certainly seems a poor fit to cast baby-faced Riley as Kerouac's alter ego and innocent-seeming, blue-eyed Hedlund as Kerouac's stand-in for Neal Cassady, a charismatic speed-gobbling chatterbox. Thankfully, 'On the Road' is also backed by veteran talent such as Viggo Mortensen, Terrence Howard, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi and Elisabeth Moss. And then there's Kirsten Dunst.

McNally is certain the Beat novelist would approve. "Kerouac wanted to see his movie made," he says. "He was hoping for Brando at the time. But I suspect he'd be very pleased."

Tom: It was extraordinary, just taking on that seminal book, and doing it with Walter Salles, who is one of the best 50 directors alive, in my mind. It was incredibly intense and long. We shot for six months. It’s quite unusual for a film that doesn’t have car explosions and stunt set pieces to shoot for such a long time. We genuinely spent six months doing scenes, every day. That sounds stupid, but in most films that take six months, you’re actually spending four weeks to do a fight scene. It was amazing.

The British actor takes on the lead role of Sal Paradise – who leaves his aunt’s house in New York to go on a road trip across the US – in the big screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel and he Kristen who plays disaffected drifter Marylou is “a really cool girl”.

He said: “Working with Kristen was great – she’s a fantastic actress and a really cool girl.”

Although Sam loved working with his co-stars – who also include Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen and Garrett Hedlund – he admitted he was worried about taking on such an iconic role but felt he couldn’t turn down such a great opportunity.

He told BANG Showbiz: “I don’t know when it’s coming out but I’m excited about it. I was a bit scared taking on such a big role. I don’t know why though because I kept asking for it.

Tom Sturridge Talks About His Co Stars and Rehearsals

It's not easy being Kristen Stewart.

Though she looks plenty pleased sitting with costar Garrett Hedlund in this just-released still from On the Road, her pal and fellow Road costar Tom Sturridge says he's seen firsthand how aggressive the paparazzi can be with K.Stew.

"I think, you know, with her and with everybody, it's just not fair, especially with like young girls," Sturridge told me the other day while promoting his new flick Waiting For Forever (out tomorrow) at West Hollywood's Standard Hotel. "It's outrageous. Men chasing young girls? It's terrible."

Working with Stewart on On The Road was anything but terrible. "She's astonishing," Sturridge said. "I think she's genuinely an extraordinary actress, and she does things in the film that I've never seen her do. But also kind of never seen anyone do. Yeah, she was just brilliant." (FYI: He doesn't lock lips with her, but costar Garrett Hedlund does.)

On the Road, an adaptation of Jack Kerouac classic beat novel of the same name, also costars Sam Riley. "It was so weird," Sturridge said. "I remember the beginning when all of us were sitting at rehearsals looking at each other being like, 'How is this responsibility of this film sitting on our shoulders?'"

Sturridge also revealed that he hasn't seen Hedlund's most recent flick, Country Strong. But he doesn't really have to. "Garrett has sung me all the Country Strong songs and acted out whole scenes for me so I feel like I've seen it," he said, laughing.

In Waiting For Forever, Sturridge plays a professional juggler who has a lifelong obsession with a childhood friend, played by Rachel Bilson. "I've definitely been obsessed with a couple of girls," said with a smile. "They didn't work out."

Sam Riley Talks On The Road and its Possible Haters

Riley’s role passed muster with the aggressively inked Joy Division aficionados, but his next big role has plenty of baggage too. He’s just returned from six months playing Jack Kerouac alter ego Sal Paradise in a film version of On The Road, which has finally been hauled out of production hell by The Motorcycle Diaries director Walter Salles.

“It was a monster,” he says wearily. “A hard shoot for everybody, but it’s a dream gig as well. It’s been attempted lots of times. Jean-Luc Godard was going to do it with Dennis Hopper in the Sixties, Francis Ford Coppola, who’s the executive producer on this one, was going to do it, Gus Van Sant too. When we got there we had a ‘beatnik boot camp’ to get us all ship-shape on everything jive, learning the lingo, listening to Charlie Parker, watching documentaries and having rehearsals too.”

Is he worried about attempting something so sprawlingly iconic? “There are going to be a lot of haters out there because the book means a lot to people,” he shrugs. “But you can’t make your decisions on what a blogger is going to say. I’ve got to earn my keep and I’d have been an idiot to say, ‘I’d better not do this because some people might not like it.’”

We filmed in Montreal, New Orleans, San Francisco, New Mexico, Argentina. It was six month, and it was incredible. It was the most extraordinary working experience I’ve ever had. The combination of being a part of the people that get to bring that book to life and working with Walter Salles, who I think is one of the greatest directors living today, and working with the best group of young actors around at the moment. It was such an astonishing experience.

How did you feel when you were cast?

It was incredible, I felt incredible. It was the best feeling. It was the perfect casting moment. All of us auditioned for it almost 3 years ago, and about 4 months before we started filming, Walter summoned me to New York to have lunch with him and we had this long, incredible lunch over hours talking about the book and thoughts and ideas. Sam Riley Mentions Beatnik Boot Camp

While Riley was eased into the role of Pinkie, it was a slightly different scenario on the set of his latest film, an adaptation of Jack Kerouac's On The Road, in which he plays Kerouac's autobiographical narrator, Sal Paradise.

"It was very intimidating to play Kerouac, or Sal Paradise, especially as an Englishman," he says. "And day one was a funeral scene," he grimaces.

The cast, including Twilight's Kristen Stewart, prepared for the film by attending 'Beatnik boot camp'.

"We all wore berets and moved around clicking our fingers," he jokes.

"It was an incredible experience. I'd never been to any of the places we went to. We went from Montreal to Chile to Argentina, Louisiana, Arizona, Mexico, Calgary, San Francisco."

But that meant spending more than five months away from his home in Berlin, which he shares with his wife, actress Alexandra Maria Lara, who he met on the set of Control.

"Yeah, it had to be like that for periods of time," he says. "When you're in a relationship and you're doing this weird job, you try and come up with a rule of being away for no longer than three weeks. It's not always possible."

Riley Tried To Sneak 'Curtis Dance' Into On The Road

British actor SAM RILEY is desperate to see the final cut of his new movie ON THE ROAD to find out whether he has won a bet to sneak his famous IAN CURTIS dance moves into a scene.

The 31 year old played the Joy Division singer in 2007 movie Control, and he learned to mimic the late star's unique dance style for the part.

Riley is constantly asked to show off his moves, and when a crew member working on On The Road challenged him to appear in the background of a scene doing the famous dance, the actor accepted.

He now has to wait to see the final edit of the movie to discover if his efforts were successful.

Riley tells Britain's Q magazine, "I've been asked to do it (sing Joy Division songs) a few times since Control. And I've been asked to do 'the Ian Curtis dance' a few times, too.

"There's a party scene in On The Road, which I've just finished filming. One of the assistants said he'd give me $50 if I somehow managed to do the Curtis dance in the background. I need to see the final cut to find out if I've won."

Riley stars in the upcoming movie opposite Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst.

Switching subjects completely, I believe that you have been filming On The Road.

Braga: I just finished, yeah.

Kind of an iconic book, kind of a big project, a lot of people involved, it was filming for a long time. For the people who don’t know: who do you play, and what was the experience like making the film?

Braga: I play Terry, she’s a Mexican that works in California in cotton fields. She’s a character that Sal Paradise, which is Kerouac, he meets her in a bus and then they stay for a little bit together – it’s a small part like everyone else because he’s on a journey, so each person has a different participation in it. It was an amazing experience because it’s such an important famous book, so many people were involved in making this project – Coppola owns the rights. It’s been trying to be made like, forever. So being a part of it’s an honor, it’s a great experience. And it’s Walter Salles that is a really great Brazilian director that I love, that I always wanted to work with him. Every point of it got my passion to be a part of it.

Did you go – ’cause obviously once word hit that he was gonna make this thing – did you go after the project or did they come after you?

Braga: No, he came after me actually. He invited me, I was very honored that he thought about me for that, because I always wanted to work with him, and it’s a dream come true to be part of this specific one – specially because he’s been trying to make this film for the past five years. He researched, he’s very passionate about the Beat Generation, so… Being a part of this dream come true moment of his life, that is a Brazilian director, someone that I admire it’s – it was priceless.

When you’re getting ready to do a role like that, and you’re dealing with the material that’s so iconic to so many people… Do you study the book, do you study the Beat Generation? Talk about your preparation for playing such a part.

Braga: It’s fun, because I always – I love to do a big preparation like, I read the book and all that, but because the character was very much connected to that. But as my character in On the Road, even if I read the book when I was younger – but my character in On the Road it’s a – she doesn’t know much about the Beat Generation, she’s not part of that because she works in a cotton field, she works in California, on the border. She’s poor in a sense of “that’s her life” – she has a son, she works with her parents… She wakes up, she works, she goes to bed. So that’s her life. I didn’t go much deep into the Beat Generation just because I didn’t have… You know, I did myself under curiosity, I’ve done it before – even way before doing the film, just under, you know, curiosity and the interest of what that generation was, but… For the film, I didn’t want that because – specially talking to Walter – she’s a completely different part of his journey, and actually when he meets her, she goes away from that and learns something him. That’s something that Walter wanted, so I wasn’t much concerned about knowing a lot about the Beat Generation because of that – because she’s not a part of this world.

With the amount of actors, did you shoot your sequence like in a span of like a week or two? Or were you sort of in-and-out – like, were they calling you back every once in a while?

Braga: I was supposed to be there for a week, but then it ended up being three weeks because we had to change locations, but I loved it, because I love getting connected to the crew and living, you know, with them, and being a part of it. So it was great, but it was three weeks, I had to shoot different days… But it was great, because I wanted to gain a little bit of weight because the body in the forties was different, and I wanted to be tan because she works in the cotton fields, so I got a lot of sun…

[sarcastically] It must have been tough.

Braga: [sarcastically] It was so hard. No, I’m kidding. But it was great, it was a great crew from all over the world, like makeup from France and Argentina , different type of actors, director… So it was interesting, I loved it.

Well, there’s no pressure on me! I just play a travelling salesman who picks up the young lads. I don’t want to give away too much because I’m really only in a couple of scenes. I just love the book and I’m glad that it’s finally being made into a film.

You’ve written and directed four films. Is there a book you’d love to adapt?
Yeah, there’s a book by William Burroughs called Queer that I’ve been in the process of trying to make into a film. And there’s a book of short stories by Davy Rothbart called The Lone Surfer Of Montana, Kansas. I’ve adapted three of those into a feature, and we’re actively trying to get that made as well.

Rising Star Doesn’t Miss a Beat

If actor Garrett Hedlund seems a little perplexed, it shouldn't be surprising.
He just arrived from San Francisco after wrapping the Walter Sallesdirected movie version of Jack Kerouac's classic beatnik novel, On the Road.

The 26-year-old's been submerged in a 1950s hipster frame of mind since filming started in Montreal last fall. And now he finds himself at a fancy Beverly Hills hotel in the 21st century.

He's here to discuss his modern day country crooner role in the recently opened melodrama, Country Strong. But he can't help but get nostalgic for On the Road, set for release in theatres later this year.

"It was almost like a dream to be around their hangouts," says Hedlund of filming in San Francisco's North Beach area where the beat poets congregated.

On the Road co-stars Kristen Stewart, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen and Terrence Howard, but it is Hedlund who is the main attraction.

He plays the quasi-Kerouac protagonist who journeys across postwar America in search of adventure and an identity. The book was a precursor to the Beat Generation and the poetry and jazz that enveloped the anti-establishment movement of the 1950s and '60s.

Humbled by the experience, Hedlund says he enjoyed immersing himself in the Kerouac vibe and being part of Salles "guerrilla style" film making.
"I'll be back to myself soon," he says, smiling at his disassociation.

Indeed, his On the Road experience was in stark contrast to acting on a Vancouver sound stage for the tech-heavy TRON: Legacy, or filming in Nashville for Country Strong.

Mostly, he's grateful to have all three movies on his resume, no matter how different they might be. "Extreme is the best place to be from," Hedlund suggests.

Born in Roseau, Minn., he was raised on a turkey farm, but at 14 moved with his mother to Phoenix, Ariz. After graduating from high school in Phoenix, he moved to L.A. to seek his fame and fortune, but realistically would have taken anything remotely connected to acting.

Luck, timing and his good looks paid off quickly. He made his film debut in the 2004 swords-and-sandals epic Troy, playing Brad Pitt's younger brother, then he co-starred in the well-received football drama Friday Night Lights.

He followed up that impressive one-two punch with his ensemble portrayal in 2005's Four Brothers with Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson and Andre Benjamin.

It hasn't been all positive, however. He had a small role in the fantasy flick, Eragon, which didn't live up to expectations. He was also a part of the 2007 Lindsay Lohan bomb Georgia Rule.

No matter, he's back on track in a big way. Besides his lead role in On the Road, he's received decent notices playing the son of Jeff Bridges in the TRON sequel, and he picked up some positive reviews for his singer-songwriter fellow in Country Strong with Leighton Meester, Tim McGraw and headliner Gwyneth Paltrow.

Certainly, Paltrow's impressed with Hedlund. She insists that he brings a rare sense of self to the big screen.
"Garrett's so paradoxical," says the Shakespeare in Love Oscar winner, who had some love scenes with Hedlund. "He is so tall and he's like a real man, not like a puny, Hollywood actor. But he's so sensitive, and he's got so much heart, and you look in his eyes and there is so much in there."

For now, Hedlund is taking a break. He's been on movie sets for the last few years and feels he needs time out. For the most part, he plans to hide out at his L.A. apartment and continue to be anonymous. "What people think is so glamorous isn't," he says of the celebrity game. "It can get quite cold and cruel at times."

Rather than hanging out at clubs and restaurants, he'd rather read or research.
"You've got to put the work into the craft," Hedlund says. "You got to focus on the task at hand, and not cheat yourself."

If, by chance, he starts to get noticed on the street or tracked by the paparazzi, he promises to disappear. "When fame gets to be too much, I'll just dig a hole in the ground and hide."

Q: How did you manage to drop 30 pounds in 5 weeks?

GARRETT: This trainer, Gunnar Peterson, he trained me for Troy and this is maybe the second or third time I’ve trained with him and he’s just so good at what he does so it makes it easy. And you’re laughing the whole time. You’re not crying. Then, we had to get ready to do On the Road but I had to keep the facial hair to go to Nashville to do additional scenes for Country Strong. So while I’m at the boot camp for On the Road, I got the beard going.

Q: There was a boot camp for On the Road?

GARRETT: Yeah. We did a beat boot camp with biographers and family members.

Q: What do you do there – drink coffee and smoke and snap your fingers?

GARRETT: And then once I’m finished with that, then I can shave the facial hair off and then go about that and then I have to go back and do it and it was so chaotic. It’s been such a multiple personality sort of disorderly year. How can I make that make sense – multiple personality disorder.

Riley has the week off from shooting On The Road, an adaptation of Jack Kerouac's legendary buzzed-out buddy novel, which is being directed by Brazilian Walter Salles. He has spent his summer hopping between Montreal, New Orleans, Phoenix, Calgary and "the arse-end of Argentina", with further stints in San Francisco and Montreal to come. He's playing Sal Paradise, Kerouac's autobiographical stand-in and narrator, and smoking - specifically learning how to toke on filterless Camels "without getting a gob full of baccy" - has been a key part of the prep. Then there's the accent, "which is awkward, because he's French-Canadian, but from Boston, and likes to sound like he's from New York", not to mention the physical discrepancies. Kerouac was muscular, blue-eyed and went to Columbia on a sports scholarship. Riley is from a village near Leeds, has brown eyes, and is, by his own admission, "a proper streak of piss". "I'm sure I'm not welcome in Los Angeles at the moment," he says, taking a drag. "There must be a lot of guys going, 'Who the fuck? From Leeds? Where the fuck's Leeds?'"

He's almost certainly right, and there are probably some older ones muttering too. For Americans, On The Road, the story of Sal and his friend Dean Moriarty crisscrossing the country on a jazz-fuelled, mind-expanding odyssey, is one of those books: a heavyweight contender in the ongoing quest for the Great American Novel and a usual suspect on any high-school syllabus. Francis Ford Coppola has held the movie rights to the book since 1968, and there were numerous abortive attempts to transpose it onto the screen before Salles, director of The Motorcycle Diaries, finally got the nod. A few weeks before shooting began, Salles showed Riley and Garrett Hedlund, star of the recent Tron revival who plays Dean, a documentary he'd made about past efforts to put On The Road on film.

"You wouldn't believe it," says Riley. "It starts off with the tale of how Dennis Hopper was going to do it with Jean-Luc Godard. Hopper went to meet Godard at an office in Los Angeles and found a note on the door that basically said, 'I'm sorry Dennis, I can't stand the weather here. I've gone back to Europe.' That was before it even started. Then there's Johnny Depp being interviewed saying, 'I was going to do it with Brad Pitt.' Sean Penn was going to do it with John Malkovich and Gus Van Sant or something. Then Leonardo DiCaprio was going to play Sal. Then they plyed us casting tapes of Brendan Fraser playing Sal and Matthew McConaughey doing Dean and Russell Crowe as [William S] Burroughs. It went on and on. They asked all these experts what they want from the movie ans Sean Penn goes, 'I hope it's well acted.' Then the documentary ends. I was like, 'Great. Why are you playing this to us? What the fuck?!'"

"I just think this movie will be when the last plane is shot," said the filmmaker Walter Salles in mid-2010. Done. The final slate of On the Road was hit on December 11 last, San Francisco (USA), after almost four months on the road with the actor Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Tom Sturridge, Kristen Stewart, Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi and Alice Braga, and others. The care Brazilian is understandable, since even today many difficulties prevented the adaptation of this classic of the Beat movement, Jack Kerouac, published in 1957. The economic crisis of 2008 was the latest drying up funding sources and those interested in venturing into an independent film. On Thursday, the director started editing the film. In an interview, said preparations for the film, tells how they were filming in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Argentina and says the film should be ready by early 2012.

Leaf - After so many names involved in the attempt to film "On the Road" feels like having finally secured the implementation of this project?

Walter Salles Jr. - Without the support and generosity of filmmakers and writers connected to the other incarnations of the project, such as Francis Ford Coppola, Roman Coppola and Barry Gifford, would not have reached the end ... This is the only certainty is that. From a personal standpoint, finished shooting a project that took six years to materialize is not simple. It is a feeling of emptiness.

The fact that he had been shot in 2010 somehow changed their options, since the movie deals with themes like the role of immigrants, the culture of fear, sexual repression, liberation by drugs?

The invitation from Zoetrope to make the film came in 2004. During those years that was not possible to finance the film, much has changed in the U.S. and worldwide. But Kerouac's book transcends a particular period and their possible inconsistencies. He announces a behavioral revolution that has opened up many of the changes usually associated with libertarian 60 years and that affect how we live today, the sexual liberation, mind expansion through drugs, redefining the family, the emergence of ecology etc.. And most of all, the need for experimentation.

When filming began? As last?

The MK2, the French independent producer, gave us the green light at the end of May. We only had eight weeks to prepare to start shooting, less than any movie I've directed. There were sixty-few days of shooting, 20 less than "Diaries [Motorcycle (2004)], for the same number of scenes. In other words, there was no time for much hesitation.

What countries and cities were the recordings?

In the U.S. cities that have kept traces of the past are increasingly rare. There are malls, Walmarts and McDonalds everywhere. This forced us to go farther and farther to find places that still had some architectural interest, and deserted roads. We shot in different regions of Canada, around Calgary, Montreal and Hull, in New Orleans (USA), in the deserts of Arizona, San Francisco and Mexico.

There was shooting in Bariloche. Why?

First, because the film's budget did not allow us to wait for winter in the Northern Hemisphere. One solution would be to create the winter digitally manipulating the images. I come from the documentary and am totally against it, fake snow, actors having to spend the sensation of cold at 40 degrees in the shade. That was when we remember that during the filming locations of "Diaries" was a stretch of the border between Argentina and Chile we had left out because it seems to eastern U.S.. We went there in August. We shot in the middle of snowstorms, freeze the truth and still had the pleasure of finding a good part of the team "Diaries."

What is the film's budget? The fact that a smaller budget than anticipated changed the film in any way?

The cost of On the Road "differs from other films in that it includes the expenditures that occurred during 45 years of development ... a dozen different routes, payments to producers involved in earlier stages of the film, etc.. The MK2 is still calculating the final budget, but the fact is that we shot with economy and urgency to get to the end. It was not possible, for example, mounted parallel to the shooting. It is the first time this has happened since "Foreign Land" (1996). We did not see what we shot.

There is already an estimate of when will be released?

No, because only now we begin to discover the film images, with the beginning of the assembly. I imagine he will be ready by year's end or early 2012.

If Riley relished Mirren's being playful, he sounds less enamoured with the project he has just finished. For the past six months he has been travelling all over America, shooting Walter Salles' adaptation of Jack Kerouac's On the Road. As Sal Paradise, Kerouac's autobiographical narrator, Riley heads a cast that includes Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart.
Riley had to get fit – "my mum calls me a streak of piss" – and spend four weeks in a beatnik bootcamp. He pulls a face. "Don't fucking ask." Did they all get stoned? "We were allowed to, but not encouraged. I'm a 30-year-old who used to smoke for breakfast, but the Americans smoke super-strength skunk so I stuck to my hash. Kerouac experts talked to us, we watched films, learned the difference between Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie."
And how was Stewart, star of the Twilight films, one of the biggest – and, according to the tabloids who won't leave her alone – grumpiest actors in the world? "She's just 20! The tabloids can fuck off! She wasn't grumpy at all. She was a bit of a Rapunzel character in her hotel suite, not wanting to come to the bar to spend all evening having her photo taken."
When Riley was in America, he missed his wife and new friends in Berlin badly. How is his German? "Super! Fantastisch! When I initially started going out with the lads, with Alex's old school friends, they all spoke English. After a while, though, they expected me to learn German. Alex was born in Romania and she speaks Romanian with her parents, so I understand a bit of that too."
The Leeds lad who was folding T-shirts not so long ago has done pretty well for himself. "Yeah, I got myself a career, met my wife, moved to a new city, learned some languages. I still pinch myself." He is still, however, sleeping 14-hour days to recover from playing Sal Paradise. "On the Road was a hell of an experience so I'm planning to take a break." He grins and looks very pleased with himself. "For now I'm going to be a hausfrau."

You might need to find one after your next project, the long awaited film version of On the Road. I don't want to put any pressure on you but it’s arguably one of the most highly anticipated films of all time.

Yes, I’ve spent the last six months working incredibly hard with Walter Salles on it. It was a phenomenal cast, who I will love for the rest of my life. We embarked on something so rare and so rich. I’m incredibly proud to be a part of it.

You play Dean Moriarty, which is a plum role that’s been discussed over the years as a vehicle for everyone from Marlon Brando to Brad Pitt. How did you get cast?

I read the book when I was 17 and still in high school. I immediately went online and read that Francis Ford Coppola was going to direct it then. I thought, Oh man, I’ll never get a part in this! [Laughs] Never mind that I was just a 17-year-old high school kid in Arizona so why the hell should I get the part? I met with Walter in 2007 and auditioned for him and then made a screen test. Walter called me on my birthday that September and told me I got the part.

What a nice birthday gift.

It was the greatest day of my life. Then came the journey of trying to get it made. For two years I worked on the character and read everything—all of Jack’s books. I read Neal’s book, The First Third, and all the letters between them and between Neal and Carolyn [Cassady, Neal’s ex-wife and biographer] and between Neal and Allen Ginsberg [the poet, who was one of Cassady’s lover]. Just going into auditions and saying that I was working with Walter Salles on On the Road gave me confidence, even though I didn’t have any money. I was fortunate to come across Tron and Country Strong to help me survive in Los Angeles.

Dean seems like a character who’d be difficult to shake when the cameras stop rolling. How did playing him affect you?

Yeah, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to shake certain traits of his. I honestly feel that all the years I’ve spent preparing to play Neal Cassady made me a better person. It was such an honor to portray one of the richest characters ever written. The night before we wrapped Carolyn came to the set. She sat with me and Sam Riley [who plays the Kerouac stand-in Sal Paradise] and for her to look at both of us and smile…wow. We went to Vesuvius [a bar in San Francisco], where those guys drank. The three of us walked arm in arm and the sole of her shoe broke so I pulled my boot off and slipped my sock off and tied it around the sole of her shoe and we went to Vesuvius and sat down. She just closed her eyes and took it in. I don’t even have the words to express how it made me feel. It was so fucking fulfilling.

There have been screenplays of On the Road in development for decades. Is your film adapted from the first published version of Kerouac’s novel, which was censored, or…

It’s based on the scroll version. The original scripts were always based on the censored version but just last year the scroll version came out. To be infused with the raw honesty of the scroll and infuse events from the letters, I think the film is going to be so filled with the beautiful honesty of what this story was about.

The real Neal Cassady was bisexual and there was understated homoerotic tension between the Dean and Sal characters in Kerouac’s book. How explicit is this portrayed in the film?

Between Dean and Sal, not so much – it’s more between the Ginsberg character and Dean and the relationship they had. That is very visible in the screenplay.

You've got 'Country Strong' and 'Tron' in theaters at the same time. What's next for you?

I'm a little beat now, because I just worked for six months straight on this film, 'On the Road,' the Jack Kerouac novel. It was an incredible experience around the world. Playing this character, Neal Cassady -- that's Dean Moriarty in the book -- it's such an infamous, rich, vibrant, rare role. We were in Canada to South America, back up here -- New Orleans, Arizona -- down to Mexico, back to Canada and over to 'Frisco. I've been on that since 2007, so I've been prepping for that this whole time; that's been three or four years of preparation and research. It became a little hard at times, too, because being on that one, then jumping onto 'Tron' and 'Country Strong'; you've flown this kite so high in terms of prep and everything you read -- all of Proust, Twain, Wolfe, Kerouac, Cassady', Ginsberg and Burrows -- and all the jazz research. You fly this kite so high that you're scared, and you think you have to tie it to a post and hope it's there when you come back to it. Ultimately, I had to read everything all over again just to have it fresh. I wrapped that the day of the 'Tron' premiere. I had to go straight from Frisco to L.A. for the premiere, and then the next day an all-day press junket for 'Country Strong.' I was just like, "Whew!" So, everybody was going, "So, 'Tron,' huh?" And I'm just like, "I want to go home and cry, I'm so tired."

With all this musical training is this something that you’re going to keep doing?

GH: Of course on my own time. It’s funny because I was on set and Terrence Howard came up to play a role in On the Road, and we’d work together on Four Brothers and we became really close and he played a lot of guitar on that and I would just sit back. He’d show me how to play but I couldn’t. The night we wrapped in Montreal he came to my room with a bottle and a guitar, and we got to take turns. We came up with a thing like, ‘You play one. I’ll play one.’ We must have played 15 songs a piece.

Have you wrapped On the Road?

GH: I just did yesterday morning [as of December 12, 2010].

So what was that experience like?

GH: It was a guerrilla shoot with the most incredible family. Walter Salles directed it and he’s put so much work into this film over the last six or seven years. I’ve been attached since September of ‘07 trying to get this project made. Being on set during the first day like, ‘we’re fucking filming On the Road‘ to today’s the day after we just finished it. It was unfortunate to part with a family you’ve come to love so immensely on this journey.

Now that you’ve wrapped that film, what do you have coming up next?

GH: Nada. I’m very fortunate to be a part of these projects and I’m very proud of them. I’ll be able to sort of sit back and read some books that I haven’t caught up on and try to enjoy the time a little more.

That’s awesome. Did you keep up with anything like the parkour, or do you still play the guitar?

I play the guitar a little bit here and there. I haven’t lately because I’ve been on the road filming the movie ‘On the Road’ and the character doesn’t play guitar, so I didn’t want to bring the guitar along. But, I mean, I think I’ll be playing the guitar for the rest of my life.

Ha! That’s funny! So, you’re on just about every ‘one to watch’ and ‘hot’ list of 2010 and 2011. But it kind of seems like you might not really like or want people watching you in that way. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it kind of seems like acting appeals to you, but celebrity does not.

Yeah. Yeah. I mean, these films haven’t even come out yet and, you know, it’s been pretty crazy, but my focus at this time has been ‘On the Road.’ And we just wrapped yesterday morning in San Francisco, and it was exactly six months of filming. And, you know, you get so beat, and you’ve been everywhere in the world. I mean, we traveled all over the place for it. And, I mean, I wrapped at 11:00 in the morning and went straight to the airport to arrive here and go to the ‘Tron’ premiere last night on Hollywood Boulevard. And, you know, just being thrust into this, you know, massive sort of night. You know, I hope everybody enjoys the films, I’m really proud of them. But no, I mean, I’m more a private guy. And, you know, I’ll just start looking for a place to hide.

So you’ve just wrapped ‘On The Road.’ Do you know what’s next after that?
Nothing. Just rest.

Take a break? It seems like it’s been pretty intense.
Well, yeah. It’s just, you know, it was, kind of a journey of a lifetime we just embarked on. So, there was so much work put together. And I got the opportunity to play such a rich sort of vibrant character. And one of the greatest characters I feel has really been written about. And even two nights ago I got to hang with the actual character, Neil Cassidy’s ex-wife, Carolyn Cassidy in San Francisco two nights ago, and walked with her hand-in-hand up to Vesuvio’s, the old bar they used drink at.

Oh, wow.
And to be a part of this, and to look over and see Carolyn Cassidy smiling at me, it’s just — it was the very last day too, you know? We’d done the whole journey, and now this is the gift. And it was wonderful.

Adaption of Jack Kerouac's 'On The Road' Filmed in Locke

Blinding set lights, props and cameras filled Main Street in Locke, while residents, curious spectators and crewmembers watched as Director Walter Salles yelled, “action!”

Locke was the final stop for the film, which will be released in 2011. The motion picture is an adaptation of American novelist Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road,” which was written in 1951 and released in 1957. Famous American writers and musicians such as Hunter S. Thompson, Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits have been known to be some of Kerouac’s most devoted fans. Thompson’s “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” tied in with his idol’s style – though in a much more deranged way.

Sam Riley, a British actor, plays Sal Paradise – Kerouac’s alter-ego in the novel. Riley and his cast members mingled downtown, meeting the extras on set and Locke locals.

The Locke Management Association [LMA] allowed the crew to rent the Locke Boarding House during filming. The venue served as a food station and rest area for actors and crew, while the Boat House was decorated for the film’s wrap party later in the evening.

“Isn’t this so cool?” asked Martha Esch, local artist and business owner in town. “It’s so exciting.”

LMA Director Ernie Webster accompanied fellow residents on Main Street to watch the film’s production as well. Crewmember Paul Burke also chatted with the River News-Herald about production and photos on set.

Esch prepared dinner and dessert for locals who had been peaking around corners all afternoon. Crewmembers, however, were happily surprised by her generosity. “This is a first,” said a crewmember. “I don’t think we’ve ever been offered food by people in town!”

The film adaptation of “On the Road” has been in the works for years. First Gus Van Sant owned the rights to Kerouac’s novel, though Russell Banks produced a screenplay for Francis Ford Coppola in 1980. Coppola bought the film rights for $95,000. After 30 years, Brazilian Director Walter Salles [Motorcycle Diaries] took over the project, which was produced by both Coppola and Van Sant.

To prepare for filming, Salles traveled to the U.S. and retraced Kerouac’s footsteps throughout the novel. With him, highly acclaimed actors such as Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams and Steve Buscemi began filming.The $25 million movie takes the viewer throughout Kerouac’s largely autobiographical novel, which entails his journey through Mid-America.

The crew set up in Locke for three days, but the film’s stars didn’t arrive until after their shoot in San Francisco on Friday and Saturday morning.

“We’re still on the Bay Bridge, but we should be there very soon,” said Location Manager Felix Gehn, early Saturday morning. Later, he introduced himself and chatted with staff and locals in town.

Security blocked Highway 160, ensuring that semi trucks and passing cars didn’t interfere with scenes. Dusty’s store was decorated with props from the 1930s. Designed chip bags hung from clips, salted meats and cheeses were on display near the front of the store, while old-fashioned tobacco, canned goods, and household supplies filled the aisles. Pecans, walnuts and almonds also were on display in front of Dusty’s store that night. Al the Whop’s was covered with white and was the location for the film’s final scene.

Onlookers starred as Sam Riley walked down Locke’s infamous Main Street – from the tall stairwell, into the street and down the sidewalk. The crew shot the 15-second scene nearly 10 times as crewmembers and residents kept quiet. As he passed three female extras, who sat on a bench near Al the Whoop’s, one said, “What the hell are you looking at” as Riley’s character strolled by.

After the director yelled cut for the last time, crewmembers rushed to Al the Wop’s and filmed – wrapping up the movie and Locke’s involvement with the Hollywood film.

Staff began to disassemble the set on Sunday morning and tour busses, equipment trailers and actors left the tiny historical town that morning. Salle’s version of “On the Road” is set to be released in late 2011.

And he just finished shooting a film based on Jack Kerouac’s Beat novel, “On the Road.”

“Two nights ago I was hanging out with Carolyn Cassady,” Hedlund says. Cassady’s the widow of Neal Cassady, Hedlund’s character, a pivotal person in Keroauc’s life and one of the inspirations for “On the Road.” “Yesterday morning, I was driving a 1949 Hudson Hornet across the Bay Bridge in San Francisco. We finished the scene, I stopped the car, jumped on a plane, and flew to LA for the premiere of ‘Tron.’ Hollywood Boulevard was all lit up and ‘TRON’ blue. Surreal.

“Then the next morning, I get up and start talking to reporters about these movies I’m so proud of,” Hedlund says. ““I just don’t know how to express my unbelievaty at all this. I know unbelievaty’s not a word! It’s more than unbelievable to me.”

Hedlund was in the 2004 big screen “Friday Night Lights,” playing the kid living with an abusive dad (Tim McGraw). He had a role in the hit 2005 action hit “Four Brothers,” billed well below star Mark Wahlberg.

Now, at 26, he’s getting his shot in “two roles, two films, that could not be more opposite.” But they both came about, he believes, because of “On the Road,” which he was cast in way back in 2007.

“Two years went by, and we were all at a point of giving up…I was still completely on board, utterly believing in the project. I was going to the Coinstar machine just to come up with walking around money.

“But I had the confidence of having ‘On the Road’ in the works when I walked into rooms to meet with casting people. I had that going in to read for ‘Tron.’ And I had it with ‘Country Strong,’ too. This movie that was in danger of not being made backed me up. “

How long were you attached to On the Road before it began shooting?

I got cast in September of '07.

Was there any thought, when you won the Tron part, "Okay, this will help me get my other film made?"

No, I mean ... When I was cast then, I wasn't really going to do anything until we did On the Road, and then after two years of not working, it was just fortunate that I was lucky enough to get a part in Tron. I was basically taking all my coins to Coinstar to be able to eat! But it was hard for me to detach myself from On the Road for a little time because I'd put a lot of work into researching that part, and you've gotta tie that kite to a post and hope that when you come back to it, it's still flying at the same height you left it at. So that was the worry in the back of my mind.

Was there any benefit to having gone off to do Tron, then coming back to the role?

Yeah, now I can't imagine what it would have been like had I not had these experiences. It was a lot of hard work and determination to put into Tron, in terms of the training and research for it and the long hours and focus, but you realize that your body and mind are able to put that into things. And then on Country Strong, to put six months of work into guitar training and go into the studio to sing and fail in front of people, then to get back up and know that you've had a little bit of progress and someone says that you're actually good for once ... moving to Nashville and living that life and actually getting to experience that lifestyle was a huge help to my work ethic. So when it came to On the Road, I realized that my body has a lot of coals in there that I can burn if I find the fire for it.

Which property has the more intimidating fans, Tron or On the Road?

Ha-ha! Goood question. I would say On the Road, but probably because I'm doing that now. There's a lot of people who say that the book changed their lives — then again, with Tron, there are a lot of people who say that they're in film today because of Tron! I guess the scale kind of balances a bit in terms of intimidation.
